Much has happened to Cory in the past year. It all started when his friend discovered him practicing Dark Magic in the Land of Departure. Though at the time he was able to play it off as a pitiful enemy attack, he was always on edge that the Master would find out. Then two of his fellow apprentices ended up disappearing after fighting to return a world to the Realm of Light. That was also when the Heartless Invasion began. Cory was quickly recruited to act as one of the Seven Lights who would combat Lilith's Thirteen Darknesses, but the anger that dwelt in his heart and the growing darkness within him halted those plans in a crucial moment.
During the invasion, Cory had come to rely on his Dark powers more and more, even preferring them to his keyblade. But as he was tasked with guarding a Pure Hearted being they had recruited, he drew upon his darkness too much and caused even more Heartless than anticipated to converge upon the two of them. He tried to summon his keyblade, Oblivion, but it would not answer his call. Only the chain appeared in his hand, proof that he was no longer deemed worthy to wield his weapon. The heartless closed in on him and it was only by the power of the Pure Heart that either of them were able to escape. Knowing that his Master would question him regarding the near failure of his mission, Cory made a rash and dangerous decision. Without knowing if he would survive or become one of the very Heartless he had spent his life fighting, Cory used his growing Dark powers to open a Corridor of Darkness and escaped into another world.
Ending up in Traverse Town, Cory quietly settled down and waited for the Heartless Invasion to be defeated without him. As he waited, he cautiously began to train even more with his new powers and acquired a sword to replace his keyblade. With the Oblivion keychain still in his possession maybe one day he will gain his keyblade again.
When Oasis City reappeared he knew something was up. Having honed his Dark Powers more, he decided he would journey there and investigate for himself it's mysterious reappearance.
