Karis Eklund
Legend of Korra, Korra, Princess Karis
|
Appearance |
Like the faceclaim. When using her ancestral powers her eyes glow white. Her powers allow her to manipulate water and fire, however she has no choice over which one she uses. |
Personality |
Headstrong and impulsive, Karis has trouble following orders. She feels she often has the best idea on how to work through things and disregards all the others. More often than not this ends with her getting in trouble with local authorities or with whatever villains she's facing off against. Talking to Karis is like talking to a brick wall, seldom will anything useful get through to her and she's more likely to just reply to you with a sarcastic or flirty answer, sometimes both at once. Underneath her rebellious and sarcastic exterior, Karis is simply scared. She's the only one of her clan she knows of that survived the destruction of her world. She afraid of the responsibility of continuing their legacy. She has a fragile hold on her emotions, the sarcasm and flirtations act as a buffer between what she truly feels and the outside world. She gets nervous, she'll suffer insomnia and cry late into the night over her family and friends. Karis is more broken than whole and she refuses to let others know that. |
History |
Life on a frozen bit of earth isn't easy, especially when the bit of earth you live on is also an active volcano. But such is where the Kaisu tribe lived. Even in such a harsh environment they found reason to celebrate. One such reason was the birth of their princess. Karis was a special child even at her birth. Prophecy foretold that she would be the one to carry her tribe's ancestral powers. As Karis grew, she was spoiled as the Chieftain's daughter. She had the finest furs in the tribe and was given whatever she wanted to eat. When she was young she abused this and ate only the best food. It was only when her father explained to her how life worked in their tribe did she realize how harmful she was being. She began to take less fine food for herself. The Kaisu tribe had an ongoing rivalry with another tribe on their world, the Chikuki tribe. The Chikuki would raid the Kaisu and the Kaisu would return the favor in kind. Life changed for Karis during one of the Chikuki's raids. The princess had been caught in the raid and injured. She managed to activate her ancestral power then and froze the feet of both tribes to the ground. When her father learned of what happened he grew fearful. He forbade his daughter to wander outside of their camp. In his mind it was to protect her from the vengeance of the Chikuki, but to her it seemed an unreasonable punishment for something she had no control over. With all of the time Karis had to herself inside of the Kaisu camp Karis began to practice her powers. Or tried at least; the princess could not understand how her power activated or how she could voluntarily control them. That was until she found the cavern. The cavern was a mystic site, sacred to the Kaisu clan; another location Karis was banned from. She found herself exploring one day and discovered a secret entrance into the sacred site. Inside the cavern were two pools, one filled with crystal clear water, the other with red-hot magma. The two pools swirled together, mixing in perfect harmony, the water did not cool the magma nor did the magma boil the water. It was here that Karis met her mentor. The spirit of the her ancestor, the last of the Kaisu clan to hold the ancestral power before Karis. Through this spirit, Karis learned how to activate her power at will. Meanwhile the Kaisu tribe had found a new weapon to use against their rivals the Chikuki. Strange beings of darkness they called Hatoresu. They trained these minions to fight, only occasionally losing one of their own to the beasts. Karis was vehemently against the Hatoresu as was her spirit mentor. Karis' father did not listen to his daughter and soon took the tribe's warriors as well as the Hatoresu to face the Chikuki. Karis was forbidden to fight in the battle. The young princess followed behind in spite of her father's wishes. What she saw at the battle horrified her. The Chikuki had also obtained Hatoresu an had brought them along. Both sides of the conflict were equally matched. That wasn't what horrified Karis so much. It was when the order to attack was given, and the Hatoresu followed the command and attacked, everyone even. The beasts of darkness that her father had insisted upon using betrayed both sides in the battle that ensued. Karis realized that there were still Hatoresu at camp, and those of the Kaisu tribe that had remained behind were clueless as to the true nature of their 'perfect weapon'. The princess ran as fast as she could back to her tribe. She hoped against all odds that the Hatoresu in camp were still peaceful. She wasn't surprised however to see a massacre happening in her camp. Just like on the battlefield the Hatoresu were attacking the innocent of her tribe. Though she attempted to fight against the monsters she just couldn't combat all of them. She heard the voice of her ancestor's spirit calling her to the Cavern of Balance. Karis managed to arrive there just ahead of the Hatoresu. Her spirit mentor enveloped her with light and whispered: "With the last of my power I will save you." When the light subsided Karis found herself in a new world. The princess of Kaisu clan was lost and alone. Deep in her heart she knew something. She knew that it was up to her to rescue her tribe from the Hatoresu. |
